Texas Spring Spawn Report

Author: Kyle Mobley
March in Texas means white bass (a.k.a. Sand Bass) in Texas. Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. (TPWD) published an article about the white bass run. It said, “Due to the dry summer, some rivers and reservoirs in Texas are currently experiencing low water levels and low flows, which could impact the timing of the white bass run.” So, Texas BHA contacted anglers statewide to get their spawn report for the upcoming spring fishing season. DFW – Nathan Clinkscales is an angler in the DFW area who ...

OPINION: Ask your senator to support SB 406

Author: Mike Mershon
Montanans can’t get to 3.1 million acres of our public lands. If a neighbor wants to let us walk across their land to access public lands, they should be able to do so, encouraged to do so, and rewarded for that, not prohibited from it. Unfortunately, landowners are currently ineligible for FWP’s Unlocking Public Lands program and the Public Access Land Agreements if someone else holds the lease on public lands a landowner wants to open access to. Bill awards large nonresident landowners with big game combination hunting licenses

Author: Montana BHA
Fifteen percent of the available big game combination licenses would be set aside for nonresidents owning a minimum of 2,500 acres under a bill designed to spread out hunting pressure and reward landowners. House Bill 635, sponsored by Rep. Joshua Kassmier, R-Fort Benton, had its first hearing on Thursday before the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee in Helena. The measure would also allow landowners to purchase an additional bonus point to increase their odds of drawing a hunting ...

Reducing acreage requirement for landowners proposed in elk hunting bill

Author: Montana BHA
For two years without success, Rep. Marty Malone, R-Pray, has attempted to draw a landowner preference tag to shoot cow elk on his property in the Paradise Valley. In the Montana Legislature on Thursday he introduced a bill to reduce the amount of land needed to qualify for the tags from 640 acres to 160. No one spoke in favor of the measure, House Bill 600, during the Thursday hearing before the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee. Kevin Farron, representing the Montana Chapter ...

Public Lands Rally Draws Hundreds to Protect Popular Fund

Author: Montana BHA
Few things can motivate Montanans to stand outside for close to an hour in below-zero temperatures like rallying to protect public lands. That’s what more than 200 people from around Montana did on Thursday after the call went out across the state to show state politicians that Montanans are watching legislators’ attempts to steal money from a popular public land fund. During the past five Legislative sessions, the Public Lands rally was held in the rotunda, where loud chants of “Keep Public ...

OPINION: Don't Sell Our Hunting Heritage

Author: Steve Platt
There are some forms of technology in hunting that come down to just personal preference. While others — the ones that adversely affect the experience for all hunters and jeopardize the public acceptance and future of hunting -- those cross the line. With the advent of high-definition, night-vision, heat-sensing, 24/7 live-streaming, solar-powered, remote-operated game cameras, the time has come that we put some checks on game-camera technology and the market it could create before it ...

Hundreds "Rally for Public Lands" at Montana State Capitol

Author: Montana BHA
On Thursday in Helena, hundreds of people braved below-zero temperatures and snow showers to “Rally for Public Lands” at the State Capitol. This was the fifth legislative session that conservation organizations have held the Rally for Public Lands. “Let's sort of make sure that our legislators are aware how important our public lands are economically and for our outdoor quality of life, and make sure that as they're doing their business during the session that they prioritize our access and ...
