Bill to Give Elk Licenses to nonresident Landowners Splits Sportsmen's Community

Author: Montana BHA
Montana hunters agree on many things, but a bill to give elk tags to nonresident landowners isn’t one of them. Hunters lined up outside the Senate Fish and Game committee room late last week to testify on both sides of House Bill 635. Rep. Joshua Kassmier, R-Fort Benton, carried HB 635 successfully through the House for the Montana Citizen’s Elk Management Coalition, a diverse group of Montana hunters that came together about a year ago to try to reduce the various struggles over elk. ...

Consensus hunting, access bills progress through Legislature

Iowa BHA Opposes SF516

The Iowa BHA Chapter seeks to ensure our outdoor heritage of hunting, fishing, and trapping on behalf of wild public lands, waters, and wildlife. That vision depends on equitable access to habitat and healthy wildlife populations. Senate File 516 proposes that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources focus on managing its current lands and not prioritize adding public access. BHA views this as an underhanded way to block public land increase and lead to the eventual removal of the public ...

A Closer Look at HB 635: What do Montana Hunters Get Out of This?

Author: Montana BHA
Update: On April 21st, Governor Gianforte sent HB 635 back to lawmakers with amendments. One of those was to triple the number of licenses given to nonresident landowners owning 2,500 acres. So instead of one deer/elk license being given per 2,500 acres owned (up to five), Gov. Gianforte wants all nonresident landowners who own 2,500 acres or more to get three deer/elk licenses. The explanation we got for the change was an attempt to further address hunter crowding by giving more licenses to ...

OPINION: What’s good for prisoners may not be good for hunters

In 2022, FWP established a new pheasant release program: “... which aims to engage youth in the sport of hunting, promote hunter success, and provide additional hunting opportunities for hunters of all ages by releasing up to 50,000 pheasants" per year. The legislature approved $1 million annually for this put-and-take operation, with the expectation that FWP would be spending about $20 per pheasant released. This program was incredibly controversial, but was it effective? Let’s take a ...
