Iowa BHA Opposes Attempts to Block Public Land Acquisitions

Attacks to our public lands and public access can take many forms at the legislature. They can come as proposals that focus on maintaining current public lands rather than acquiring new lands, No-Net Gain bills which mandate the sale of acres equal to the amount of new acres acquired, or outright sell off. Most recently, Iowa legislators have proposed bills that would prohibit the Iowa Department of Natural Resources from purchasing lands or being gifted lands by an nonprofit organization. ...

A Win for Public Lands in Iowa: HF 2104 Killed In the House, But The Fight is Not Over

The Iowa Chapter of Backcountry Hunter & Anglers is happy to report that HF 2104 died in subcommittee today. As a result of an outpouring of support by Iowa’s hunters, anglers, trappers, and public land advocates, the members of the subcommittee voted unanimously in opposition. HF 2104 would have removed the ability of the Iowa DNR to purchase public land at auction or acquire it from non-profit organizations who acquired it in a competitive manner. During the casting of the votes, the ...

Iowa BHA Opposes SF516

The Iowa BHA Chapter seeks to ensure our outdoor heritage of hunting, fishing, and trapping on behalf of wild public lands, waters, and wildlife. That vision depends on equitable access to habitat and healthy wildlife populations. Senate File 516 proposes that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources focus on managing its current lands and not prioritize adding public access. BHA views this as an underhanded way to block public land increase and lead to the eventual removal of the public ...

SF 2312 and Iowa BHA: How We're Responding to an Attack on Public Access

Iowa BHA continues to closely monitor the legislative progress of SF 2312 (formerly SSB 3134). The bill is a direct threat to the ability of the State to acquire more public land by implementing restrictive purchasing caps that will only allow state agencies to pay a fraction of a property’s value when attempting to acquire future public property. Simultaneously, the bill eliminates the ability of private landowners to deduct the sale of their land to state entities; thereby, ...
