Montana marijuana tax distribution bill in uncertain position after veto

Author: Montana BHA
On the final day of the 2023 Montana legislative session, Gov. Greg Gianforte vetoed a bill that would have changed the way the state’s marijuana tax revenue is distributed. Now, supporters of that bill are hoping one final maneuver can keep the proposal alive. Senate Bill 442, sponsored by Sen. Mike Lang, R-Malta, passed the Legislature with 130 out of 150 lawmakers in support. However, because of the timing of the veto – just before the Senate adjourned sine die – it’s not clear whether ...

Senator asks for poll to try to override governor’s veto of marijuana revenue redistribution bill

Author: Montana BHA
The Republican sponsor and backers of the broadly supported bill to make changes to how Montana’s marijuana tax revenue is dispersed have asked the Secretary of State to allow the legislature to consider overriding Gov. Greg Gianforte’s veto of the measure. Gianforte’s veto of Senate Bill 442 last Tuesday came around the time the Senate voted to adjourn the 2023 legislative session, causing confusion for those who developed and supported the bill alongside its sponsor, Sen. Mike Lang, ...

On the Farm

Author: Larry Stone
An Iowa family farm provides crucial wildlife habitat and public access     By Larry Stone   One family’s love of birds, cattle, and conservation has led to partnerships that protect more than 1,000 acres of prime fish and wildlife habitat for public use in the blufflands of northeast Iowa. In 1971, Phil Specht and three brothers bought 1,004 acres in the watershed of Bloody Run Creek, a trout stream that joins the Mississippi River. The land was “as good as it gets” for the wildlife ...

NMBHA Improves Riparian Habitat & Hunts Spring Gobblers

Our first project partnering with the USFS in the Lincoln National Forest was a success in many ways. After kicking off the weekend with a Pint Night at the Downshift Brewery's Hidden Taproom in Ruidoso, BHA along with AFI members made camp and enjoyed a campfire while sharing stories and planning out the morning hunts. While many miles were covered Saturday morning, no one was able to connect with a tom. Pausing only for a quick lunch and change of clothes, volunteers headed to the nearby ...

Author: Montana BHA
As if Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks complicated system to apply for special hunting permits wasn’t confusing enough, a new wrinkle was added last year without public notification. The agency has allowed hunters to purchase bonus points for 20 years to increase their odds of drawing hard-to-get permits. The points accrue over time and are awarded after the hunter failed to draw one of their first-choice tags. In theory then, a hunter who is repeatedly denied a tag and purchases a bonus ...
