Guest View: Proposed elk plan goes in circles

Author: Montana BHA
Nearly 20 years have passed since Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks last updated its Elk Management Plan (out for comment now). The new EMP has some good ideas, like reviewing the plan every five years, and raising elk herd objectives — now called goals — in many districts, then using three-year averages to determine if these goals are met. But some proposals are troubling. "Where (a hunting district) is chronically and significantly over the stated population size goal and is using limited ...

NV BHA Comments on Washoe County Lands Proposal

The Nevada Chapter of BHA recently commented on the Washoe County Lands Bill Proposal. This proposal is a significant improvement over previous proposals with far less land transfers and some great utilization of Special Management Areas (SMA), National Conservation Areas (NCA) and Wilderness Areas. Clarification on some points will be worked out as it proceeds and with clarification, we are optimistic that we will be able to support much of the bill. One of our major concerns is the Mustang ...

Idaho BHA is excited to see construction begin on the wildlife overpass across State Highway 21 near Lucky Peak. This project is a win for wildlife in Idaho, especially along a critical corridor for elk, deer, pronghorn, and black bears. In addition to helping wildlife, it will reduce vehicle collisions for Idaho drivers. FWP's New Elk Management Plan - What's in it?

Author: Montana BHA
Montana's new Elk Management Plan is out for comment now. It's nearly 500 pages. So what's in it?  Well, there are some things to like, for example, the raising of objectives - now called goals - in many districts in the eastern half of the state. And using a three-year average rather than just yearly counts to decide if we’re at, above or below objectives or goals seems like a prudent change. Additionally, allowing the plan to be updated, with evaluations scheduled every five years, can ...
