Are Montanans Really Satisfied with Elk Management?

Montana FWP recently shared the results of their research gauging hunters' satisfaction with elk management in Montana. The survey was sent to 5,000 randomly selected resident hunters with half returning a response. In corresponding press releases and news articles, FWP reports the finding that 73% of Montana hunters are ‘satisfied with elk management in Montana’, albeit noting concerns of hunter crowding, limited access to private lands, and too few elk on public lands. Issues that are all ...

Maine's High Peaks Refuge Proposal

For nearly twenty years, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has sought to ensure North America's outdoor heritage of hunting and fishing in a natural setting. A vision for backcountry conservation and a hunt for wild lands has guided our work across North America. Here in the Northeast, few places embody these values more than the High Peaks Region of Maine. The High Peaks region encompasses nearly 400,000 acres of outstanding fish and wildlife habitat and it represents one of the state’s largest ...

EVENT RECAP: Montana BHA Improves Ten Miles of Forest Service Trails

Author: Scott DeSena
At the end of August, nearly a dozen Montana BHA volunteers backpacked into Carpp Lake to complete trail improvements on more than ten miles of trail. Our crew arrived and set up at basecamp early Friday afternoon. After a bit of rain, we headed out to build rock cairns to help mark the difficult-to-follow fire-scorched stretches of Warren Pass trail. Back at camp Friday night we sat around the fire, waiting for our foil-wrapped dinner to cook. Lots of belly laughs and good stories of public ...

Competition grows to auction off coveted Montana hunting tags

Author: Montana BHA
Eleven conservation organizations vied for the privilege to auction off five Montana hunting licenses on Thursday, the most applications ever received by the Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks for the tags. “Typically in the past it’s one organization, or one or two,” said Sarah Clerget, chief legal counsel for the department. “We’ve never seen this many proposals to choose from before.” When awarded, the tags are auctioned off at events, helping to increase interest in participation for ...

Under landowner proposal, 235K acres of BLM lands in northeastern Nevada could be privatized permanently

Word has been spreading like wildfire about a sweetheart land deal being pushed by out-of-state billionaire landowner Stan Kroenke, a 3:1 land transfer that could result in public lands hunters losing access permanently to some of the best mule deer hunting – and best wildlife habitat – in northeastern Nevada. The Winecup Gamble Ranch, owned by Kroenke Ranches, is proposing to trade 235,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management lands in exchange for 85,000 of Kroenke’s private acres – a ...

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers: Mission, Issues & Actions (Triads)

Author: David Lien
During May 2023 I crossed paths with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) founder Mike Beagle in Denver, nearly four years after we last got together at a watering hole not far from Mike’s home in southern Oregon. Catching up with Mike or any other BHA members always reminds me of the three things you can count on at any BHA gathering: good people, good food, and good times. Mike recruited me into BHA during March 2005. “Consider our organization, there are none like it anywhere,” he ...

Update on School Funding for Archery and Hunting Programs

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has previously shared our concern and frustration regarding the Department of Education’s implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, or BSCA, passed last year, which has prohibited funds for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or ESEA, from being used for “training in the use of a dangerous weapon.”   Given the interpretation shared by the Department of Education, some schools have withheld funding for the National Archery in the Schools ...
