Hunting the Urban “Backcountry Wilderness?”

Hunting the urban backcountry wilderness: a misnomer? Perhaps in most cases it is. However, I recently stumbled across an area that challenges this notion. Located on the urban-rural fringe of Southwest Denver the 8,200 acre Highlands Ranch “Backcountry Wilderness Area” hosts a herd of 300 elk, 400-class bulls, and provides both limited hunting opportunities and critical over-wintering habitat for elk and deer. The Backcountry Wilderness Area is formerly private land now conserved through a ...

The Legacy of the Land and Water Conservation Fund

The following is a compilation of images of the places that we hunt and fish; public lands secured through funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The LWCF was set-up by congress in 1964 to fund public acquisition of land and water, and easements through revenues from oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Since its creation LWCF has funded land acquisitions and easements on more than 7 million acres. Many of the places that we hunt and fish have benefited ...

Clearwater Basin Collaborative:

The CBC effort is getting more intense as subgroups report to the larger working group with a goal of voting on a full package of administrative and legislative concepts in June, refinement in July by the full working group and presentation to Senator Crapo in August. Issues still needing full group support include land and water protection and more robust forest management in the front country. In addition, a very different form of county funding is being proposed which will raise eyebrows ...

Idaho Issues of Concern

Elimination of all cross country travel by ATV's on public land (BLM, USFS, State (IDL)). The IDFG must retain its ability to regulate ATV use as an aid to hunting. Non-motorized regulations exist throughout the state that are regularly ignored. Funds and personnel must be made available to enforce existing motorized closures on public lands. We support protection of lands identified by the BLM as having "wilderness character", and feel the recent order by Secretary Salazar should be ...

What We Do:

Idaho Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA) support and promote natural resource management policies based on sound scientific principles. By extension, the Idaho BHA chapter is involved in educating hunters and anglers about proposals and current policies that are unsustainable and detrimental to the landscape, wildlife populations, and our ability to pass on our values and traditions to future generations. To accomplish our objectives the Idaho BHA membership contacts policy makers and ...

State Land Bill is Egregious anti-Hunting Legislation

From the 3/4/11 Duluth News Tribune “State Land Bill is Egregious anti-Hunting Legislation” David A. Lien Hunters, anglers and other outdoors enthusiasts are concerned about a bill the State House Environment Committee is considering. It's HF332, the "No Net Increase in State Land" bill. It would deprive sportsmen and sportswomen of the incalculable benefits of public-hunting lands and other lands. In a nutshell, the bill is nothing short of anti-hunting legislation. "(The bill) would ...
