Conservation Organization Transparency and Accountability

Author: Utah BHA
6-22-2012 Dear Utah BHA members. There has been a proposed rule change submitted to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The proposed rule change would cap the amount of funds a conservation organization can keep at 10%. This rule change would bring the convention tags sold at the Outdoor Expo under a similar set of rules and accounting procedures as currently exist for the conservation tag program. Utah Backcountry Hunters and Anglers support this rule change. Proper accounting and ...

BHA Says Goodbye to Dan Heinz

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers bids a sad goodbye to Dan Heinz, a stalwart supporter of BHA and the ideals the organization stands for. He was as tough as the Nevada backcountry he loved so dearly.  Please read on for stories of Dan, written by his friends and fellow outdoorsmen. BHA Members Speak Up Against “The Border Bill” (HR 1505)

Watch the video links below of MN BHA members speaking out against HR 1505:-Erik Jensen-Bob & Pat TammenBy giving the Department of Homeland Security sweeping control of all federal lands within 100 miles of a federal border, the Border Bill would exclude sportsmen’s input from projects affecting the border lands upon which many of us depend. Some of the more problematic provisions within HR 1505 include: Section 2(b) - (b) Would give The Secretary of Homeland Security immediate access to ...

Sportsmen Support Visible OHV Identification

Have you ever had a hunting or fishing trip ruined by illegal OHV-use? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could identify the violator? In a Denver Post Opinion piece titled “Who was that masked man on the Four-Wheeler”, Colorado BHA life member Bill Sustrich described having six elk hunts ruined by illegal OHV-use. Bill argued that “from my conversations with other sportsmen, I know I am not alone — and we're getting fed up with it.” Turns out, Bill was right, he is not alone. In a letter urging ...

Hunting the Urban “Backcountry Wilderness?”

Hunting the urban backcountry wilderness: a misnomer? Perhaps in most cases it is. However, I recently stumbled across an area that challenges this notion.Located on the urban-rural fringe of Southwest Denver the 8,200 acre Highlands Ranch “Backcountry Wilderness Area” hosts a herd of 300 elk, 400-class bulls, and provides both limited hunting opportunities and critical over-wintering habitat for elk and deer. The Backcountry Wilderness Area is formerly private land now conserved through a ...

The Legacy of the Land and Water Conservation Fund

The following is a compilation of images of the places that we hunt and fish; public lands secured through funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The LWCF was set-up by congress in 1964 to fund public acquisition of land and water, and easements through revenues from oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Since its creation LWCF has funded land acquisitions and easements on more than 7 million acres. Many of the places that we hunt and fish have benefited ...
