Comments on the Bureau of Reclamation and the Idaho Water Resource Boards Draft Henrys Fork Basin Study

Author: Wyoming BHA
The Henry Fork Basin Study (HFBS) discusses future water management options that have significant potential negative impacts to Wyoming wildlife. While the HFBS discusses impact to fisheries and game animal habitat it fails to delineate specific impacts to Wyoming game and fish. Little or no economic benefit will accrue to the State of Wyoming or to its hunters or anglers from this proposed water management project but risk to Wyoming’s game animal habitat and fisheries is great. Mule deer ...

Fishing the Wilderness

Author: Jeff Young
The following is an excerpt from BHA Member, Jeff Young's new book The River's Voice.   I have a favorite place to fish that I will not describe in detail. I plan to keep it special; a place that only I know about, or a few adventurous souls who figure it out for themselves. There are many places in New Mexico where one can park a car, and head 20 feet or so to the river to find fish. In these places you will find crowds, camps, and kids throwing rocks. Although I am not snobby enough to ...

Stewardship and the Hunt

The following is a talk given by Dr. George N. Wallace at Colorado State University's (CSU) College of Natural Resources Fall Seminar Series on "The Culture of Stewardship", December 9th, 2004. George is an active BHA member and retired CSU professor. I know that the number of fishery and wildlife biology students that hunt has declined and are perhaps now a minority. I am going to propose that hunting can contribute to land stewardship and foster a commitment to land health as it has for ...

A Perspective on BHA, Conservation and Hunting

Longtime Oregon BHA Member Mathew Grady shares his thoughts on the need for BHA, hunting and the conservation of wild lands.  It has been a long time since I put words to paper regarding my passion for wild lands. However, my mind has never stopped working on the problem of Nature’s devalued status in our society, nor has my heart stopped breaking from the seemingly relentless destruction of wild places in the name of this or that political or financial objective. For a while, I have felt ...

Shout-out to my gear: “What up, Gear!”

Author: Grant Alban
By BHA Development Associate, Grant Alban   With an elk and an antelope in my freezer, the sun began to set on my hunting season. The last two days I did give in to a mildly frantic desperation that had me trying to fill my deer tag – but alas, nothing. Back in my garage that Sunday night, I emptied my hunting pack with some relief. Hunting was over for the year. The thing that I had looked forward to for so long had come and gone – but with it came sleeping in, fewer stops at the gas ...

Montana BHA Shoots Down Drones

Author: Montana BHA
Over a year ago MT BHA recognized that rapidly revolving and availability of unmanned aerial vehicle (drones) technology threatened fair chase hunting.  GPS and real time cameras, including infrared cameras can easily be attached.  Drones are more common and cheaper than ever.  They can be easily flown at night to scout for hunting the next day.  They can be used to move wildlife to aid hunting.  We have seen too often that delaying regulating technology leads to no action by agencies, and ...

The Year in Review from Idaho BHA

2/18/2014Dear Idaho Backcountry Hunters and Anglers,Hopefully you were able to get out and enjoy some success last fall, however you measure it, and by now are planning your next adventure into the backcountry.
