Nevada BHA leads fight against guided helicopter hunts in the Ruby Mountain Wilderness

The following letter was submitted by Nevada BHA to the Elko County Planning Commission, stating BHA's opposition to an exemption that would allow guided helicopter hunts in the Ruby Mountain Wilderness Area. June 16, 2015 Dear Mr Kingwell and the Elko County Planning Commission, I am writing to express my concern about the pending request of Ruby 360 for certification of heliports by Elko County. I urge you to seriously consider what Elko County would be at risk of losing should such ...

Alaskans Who Value the Outdoors Should Oppose HB 115's Unconstitutional Land Grab

Author: Mike Rogers
On Feb. 5, the bill HB 115 (better known as The Alaska Sovereignty Act) advanced to the Judiciary Committee. Sportsmen and other Alaskans who care about our outdoors must unite in opposing it. The fact this legislation is still trundling along is surprising for a few reasons. The first and most compelling is its fundamental illegality, since the state divested itself of interest in those lands at statehood. In effect, we’d be declaring our state constitution unconstitutional. Even Rep. Mike ...

Oregon BHA Spring 2016 Update

Now that the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge has ended, volunteers are lining up to show their support for public lands. Oregon chapter members met in Bend in February to discuss possible projects. Among the ideas floated were boots-on-the-ground habitat related projects, rehabilitation of the occupation site and a fundraiser for the refuge. Oregon BHA will continue to be engaged as information becomes available. Public lands transfers continue to be a pressing issue for ...

New York BHA Spring 2016 Update

Deer hunting regulations can unite or divide hunters in New York State. For several years, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has been considering regulation changes. After a multi-year study of hunter attitudes, the DEC elected to retain the existing regulations. This decision means that new mandatory antler restrictions and reduced season lengths are off the table for the foreseeable future. No matter which side you’re on, it’s heartening to see the DEC considering the ...

New England BHA Spring 2016 Update

Board member Matt McKenzie of Connecticut submitted a letter on behalf of the chapter in support of the proposed Great Thicket National Wildlife Refuge in New England. The plan would protect habitat for the threatened New England cottontail and manage for important young forest habitat, which is becoming increasingly rare in coastal and southern New England. The USFWS proposes to acquire lands from willing sellers in southern Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut and on Cape Cod. ...

Nevada BHA Spring 2016 Update

On Feb. 22, BHA members joined in a pro-public lands rally in Reno in response to presidential candidates’ cries to seize public lands and transfer them to state control. BHA members were among nearly 100 people to cry, “Keep public lands in public hands!”  We spearheaded discussions within county and state wildlife commissions to consider legislative prohibitions on drones and computerized trigger mechanisms for hunting purposes. We also took a stance limiting, if not banning, the use of ...

Idaho BHA Spring 2016 Update

Idaho Chapter leaders held our annual meeting in January. The meeting initiated what has been our most productive quarter yet. We added Eric Crawford of Moscow and J.D. Miller of Boise to the Idaho Board. Additionally, we kicked off the “Habitat Watch” program, similar to the Forest Watchman program that has been successful in other states. Thanks to Dan Herrig for coordinating this program. To learn more, contact Dan or one of the co-chairs. Events have resulted in the addition of 30-plus ...
