Expanding Public Access on Colorado's State Trust Lands

Author: Tim Brass
The state of Colorado currently provides public hunting and fishing access on a mere 20 percent of its state trust lands, or approximately 480,000 of 3 million acres. This represents the lowest level of public access offered on state trust land in any state in the West. Of the other 80 percent, much of the best hunting and fishing is leased to the highest bidder for exclusive recreational access, locking out most sportsmen. Contrast this with our federal public lands, nearly all of which are ...

Colorado BHA Op-Ed: Transferring Federal Public Lands to States Bad for Hunters and Anglers

As a big game hunter who (like over 90% of Colorado sportsmen) hunts public lands, the recent push by some elected officials and big-industry groups to transfer our federal public lands to state ownership, or to sell them off outright to private interests, is more than a little troubling. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that long ago (during the Bush administration years) that similar shenanigans were taking place: former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) introduced a bill requiring the federal ...

What America's Outdoor Media says about the Public Land Siezure

Outdoor Life Online: Dec. 31, 2014 “Stop this Silly Talk” ... instead of continuing to talk about shedding federal land in America, let’s talk about making what we have more accessible and productive. Field & Stream Online: Dec. 31, 2014 “The ‘ultimate disaster’... The idea to sell or give away these lands... is now a major concern.” Petersen’s Hunting Magazine. Dec. 2014-Jan. 2015 “But instead of adding more land, our Federal government, in most cases spearheaded by conservative Republicans ...

Maintaining Solitude

We believe that hunting and fishing are inherently silent pursuits. In the field, loud noises should be made sparingly and intentionally – the shriek of an elk bugle, the report of a rifle shot, the war whoop of a large fish brought to hand. The incessant whine of internal combustion is not among those. We live by the ethic of hunting and fishing on foot – or on horseback, raft, canoe or bike. Of course you have to get to the trailhead or the bridge, but that is where the motor should go ...

Top Five Reasons Why Transferring Our Public Lands to State Ownership is a Bad Idea

States manage their lands to make money, not to provide opportunities for recreation. States can’t afford to manage our public lands and would be forced to either raise taxes (a nonstarter) or sell them to corporations or wealthy individuals. Public lands are good for the economy. Currently, many state lands across the country don’t allow hunting or camping…or even hiking. You already own them. As a U.S. citizen, you own our public lands. The government is just the caretaker. Once you lose ...

Where do the Presidential Candidates Stand on Public Lands?

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is invested in conserving important backcountry lands and waters, upholding and expanding public access to those places and, of course, ensuring that U.S. public lands remain firmly in the public’s hands. BHA remains strongly opposed to any efforts to sell, transfer or otherwise divest ownership of these lands from you and me – the American people. Where do the presidential candidates stand on this important issue? Recently the Reno (Nevada) Gazette-Journal ...

The Elliot State Forest: Keep it Public!

Oregon’s 82,500-acre Elliott State Forest is well known by sportsmen and women for the coveted public access it provides to high quality hunting and fishing. Roosevelt elk, blacktail deer and wild populations of salmon, steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout call the old growth timber and cold, clean waters home. Established in 1930 as Oregon’s first state forest, the Elliott was dedicated to provide a sustainable source of timber revenue to Oregon schools. Unfortunately, the Elliott stands ...
