FAQ on the National Monument Protections & Official Review

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, photographed by Bob Wick, BLM Why does BHA care about this decision? As outlined in our National Monuments Report, BHA supports the use of the Antiquities Act as one of the tools in the toolbox to permanently protect important fish and wildlife habitat as well as our hunting and fishing traditions. President Trump’s attack on monuments comprises the single largest rollback of protected public lands in the nation’s history and could undermine the ...

What most anglers don’t know is that they have a constitutional right to fish in any stream that they can reach without crossing private land. This right was enshrined in water law when was New Mexico was a territory and written into our state Constitution. The New Mexico Supreme Court upheld and clarified these ...

THE RIO GRANDE NATIONAL FOREST NEEDS TO HEAR FROM YOU! (Comments are Due December 29)

Author: Colorado BHA
Comments for wildlife and habitat protection on the Rio Grande National Forest The Rio Grande National Forest is remote, wild, and largely undeveloped. In 2015, monitoring found that hunting and fishing were the second and third primary participation activities for forest visitors. With all major game species present and large areas of primarily undisturbed habitat, this forest is ideal location for a backcountry hunting or angling experience. Your help is needed to keep it that way.   The ...

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: The Epitome of Remoteness

As an avid elk hunter in Idaho and Wyoming, I often marvel at how elk country, even when very close to cars and civilization, can feel wild. Entering a tight, timbered canyon, especially when elk may be near, is awe inspiring, even when the trailhead is only a quarter mile away. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge feels wild in a different way. The 19-million-acre refuge is the epitome of remoteness. The feeling of being immersed in such a large tract of land largely untouched by man is ...

Coloradans rewarded for reporting illegal off road travel on public lands

Recently two concerned Coloradans documented violations by off road vehicle users that helped law enforcement officers uphold laws intended to promote solitude, conserve public lands and waters, and sustain fish and game. For their efforts, BHA presented these citizens with $500 rewards. Driving a vehicle off road or on a non-motorized route on national forest lands is a violation of federal law. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests, collectively “GMUG,” have engaged the ...
