BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 130: BHA’s Armed Forces Initiative: Honoring and serving those who serve

Author: Thomas Plank
“Public lands are probably not the reason you would list for joining the Army or the Marines, but they’re the key piece of what makes America the greatest country out there,” says Trevor Hubbs, BHA’s Armed Forces Initiative coordinator. BHA recognizes that military members are a key constituency when it comes to the defense of our wild public lands and waters. The Armed Forces Initiative, or AFI, is booming – from Ft. Bragg to Camp Pendleton and everywhere in between, active duty military ...

EVENT RECAP: Fence Pull on the CMR

Author: Doug Krings
MT BHAers are known to brave any kind of weather to get the job done for our public lands. Russell (CMR) National Wildlife Refuge between Grass Range and Zortman, MT. With the guidance of ...

Lizards' Paradise

Author: Spencer Como
Last month, the Castleton Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Club worked with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department to restore five-lined skink habitat on Vermont public lands. This project was supported by a grant the club received last fall through BHA's Public Land Owner Stewardship Fund. The five-lined skink, a threatened species in Vermont, is the only lizard species in the state. Unfortunately, this rare cold-blooded vertebrate is only reported to exist in a few towns in the state ...

Hunting Mountain Merriam’s (& Gettin’ Schooled)

Author: David Lien
More often than not encounters with mountain Merriam’s end with hunters getting schooled by wary toms or watching them from afar. After getting busted by a tom not long after sunup, we encountered a sizable group of hens and strutting toms without being able to close the distance. Watching this struttin’ and gobblin’ spectacle alone was worth the price of admission, but I’m getting ahead of myself. The previous afternoon Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) Habitat Watch Volunteer ...
