$30,000 Boost for Backcountry Access in Oregon

Author: Morgan Olson
Oregon BHA Donation Supports Trail Work in NE Oregon In the northeast corner of Oregon lies some of the largest and most rugged expanses of backcountry in the state.  Home of the deepest canyon in North America “Hells Canyon” as well as the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. This area contains over 1400 miles of trails that are mostly contained in the wilderness and require regular maintenance for both foot and equestrian passage. EVENT RECAP: Phil's World Fence Pull and Clean Up

I recently walked into the local BLM field office and asked what BHA could do to help them with habitat improvement projects and they were ecstatic. We immediately got this project on the books.  We had 11 BHA volunteers show up at 9am, Saturday March 29th, and after a safety briefing from the BLM field officer we hiked up nearly 2 miles to the northern end of the area. There we found a number of rolls of woven wire fence, T posts, and other fencing materials, along with about 1/3 mile ...

Selling Off Public Lands Is Not An Affordable Housing Fix

Author: David Lien
Spring is here and soon turkey hunting will be too.[1] Like many Colorado turkey (and other) hunters, I depend on public lands for hunting, hiking, camping, canoeing, and outdoor recreation in general. More importantly, wildlife species like deer, ducks, grouse, elk, and dozens more need that habitat for their survival.[2] With more than 23 million acres of public land, Colorado boasts some of the best hunting access in the nation. Here you can hunt national forests, state wildlife areas, ...

National Monuments At Risk (Veterans Defend Camp Hale)

Author: David Lien
During early April members of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) and other conservation groups converged in Washington, D.C. to advocate for keeping public lands in public hands. I had the privilege of visiting the offices of both Colorado U.S. Senators and four U.S. Representatives to talk about the importance of public lands—places like Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument—to veterans, hunters, anglers, and all Americans.[1] Congress passed and President Theodore Roosevelt ...

11 Bulls in a Row with BHA's Trey Curtiss

Trey Curtiss, a native son of Montana, is BHA’s Strategic Partnerships and Conservation Programs Manager. Trey is also among a very small group of public lands’ elk hunters who have successfully filled a bull tag now for over ten years in a row. Ponder that, for a moment: for any of us who have hunted bulls in the backcountry and think we know exactly what that entails. Do we know, really? What are we missing? What does it take, really, in time, gear, commitment, preparation? Join us ...

Two PA Sunday hunting bills introduced for 2025 legislative sessions

Pennsylvania Senate bill SB67, and House bill HB851 were introduced recently and referred to each chamber’s Game & Fisheries Committee. Both SB67 and HB851 would permit the Pennsylvania Game Commission to set all seasons and bag limits including Sundays. Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting prohibition has been a barrier to access for generations. By allowing hunters to go afield only half of every weekend, the state is effectively cutting in half the amount of time most hunters have to set aside ...

Arkansas, Stop SB290: Defend Our Watersheds, Recreation, and Rights

TAKE ACTION NOW! Amid controversy and under threat of damming, Arkansas’ iconic Buffalo National River was designated as the country’s first National River in 1972. Despite that monumental step toward permanent protection, the river has remained mired in controversy. We had hoped that the fight for the Buffalo was finally won a few years ago, when the C&H hog farm that had polluted the river — causing algae blooms and poor water quality in the river and one of its tributaries — was finally ...
