North Americans unfortunately have a long history of ecological harm. We also have the great propensity to recognize mistakes and work to fix them. Dan Egan's “The Death and Life of the Great Lakes” takes us on one such journey. The story of the Great Lakes is a rollercoaster ride of disastrous mistakes and our attempts to fix them.

The Great Lakes are a resource unmatched anywhere else on Earth. Their bounty as a fishery, ability to filter and provide fresh water to millions of people and enticing access to the heart of our country as a shipping corridor made them both critical to our nation's success and easy to exploit.

This is a conservation story that every American must read. And we must continue to stay informed on issues facing the Great Lakes because it is hard to know if we are living in the midst of recovery or another crash.
