Author: Mary Glaves
Hunting and Fishing Opportunities Threatened on the Mendenhall Wetlands The Mendenhall State Game Refuge (Taashuyee-Chookan.áani/Mendenhall Wetlands) in Juneau, Alaska, is a rare treasure—designated by the legislature in 1976 to safeguard crucial habitat and provide access for sport and subsistence hunting. These wetlands are not only a haven for hunters and anglers—they’re a globally important bird area and vital spawning grounds for anadromous fish. Now, this irreplaceable refuge is under ...

Kodiak was generous enough to brew us a special batch of Backcountry Berry and Anchorage created a wonderful Governor's Reserve in honor ...

Senate Bill 105: "An Act relating to the lease and sale of state land for recreational cabin sites; and providing for an effective date."

Author: Mary Glaves
POLICY ACTION  Updates from Alaska's 34th Legislature   On February 26th, 2025 Governor Dunleavy introduced legislation Allowing Alaskans to Build Recreational Cabin Sites, Senate Bill 105. SB 105 presents as an opportunity to obtain land, build your own recreation cabins, and have your own parcel. As hunters, anglers, trappers and outdoors people, this bill further limits our capabilities to enjoy these areas for our outdoor passions and pursuits. This bill is a loss of opportunity for ...

February 2025 with Alaska BHA - Newsletter

Author: Mary Glaves

Salmon and other unique fish species, like sheefish, that we love to hook on our lines and enjoy over a fire or yearround from our freezers also require ...

Happy Conservation Holidays from Alaska BHA

Author: Mary Glaves
Great news for Alaska's Public Lands to wrap up 2024!  On December 8, 2024, a significant win for conservation was achieved when an amendment mandating the Department of the Interior to permit the 211-mile Ambler Industrial Road was quietly removed from the final draft of the National Defense Authorization Act during conference negotiations.  This victory wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless advocacy of hunters, anglers, and committed conservation ...

WHY BHA?

Author: Mary Glaves
WHY BHA? Mary Glaves, AK Chapter Coordinator It’s #GivingTuesday 2024. The onslaught of attacks to the heritage of public lands in this country defies over a hundred year value system to conserve natural resources. We are nothing without these resources.   “The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem it will avail us little to solve all others.” - Theodore Roosevelt, 1907. If you know me well, you know I enjoy hunting, fishing, and the ...
