New England BHA Supports Rhode Island DEM’s Public Lecture on CWD

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a transmissible disease that is deadly to all members of the deer family, including whitetail and mule deer, moose, elk, and caribou. Currently, the disease is undetectable in live animals, untreatable once contracted and difficult to eliminate from the environment after being introduced to new areas. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CWD has been reported in at least 24 states in the continental United States as well as two provinces in Canada.

On April 24, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will host a public lecture on CWD in West Warwick, RI. According to a DEM press release, the lecture will focus on disease concerns, current surveillance methods, preventative measures and how hunters can help keep Rhode Island deer herds free of CWD. The lecture will be led by DEM wildlife biologist Dylan Ferreira and experts from the Northeast Wildlife Disease Cooperative.

While it has not been detected yet in our area, the New England Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers encourages New Englanders to remain vigilant and seek current, science-based information about the disease and best practices for management and prevention of spread. The New England Chapter supports this lecture because it presents a great opportunity for New Englanders to learn from qualified regional experts about this complex topic and the current rules and regulations that are in place in Rhode Island to prevent the introduction and spread of CWD.

The lecture will be held on:

Wednesday, April 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. West Warwick Public Library 1043 Main Street, West Warwick RI.
