These Woods Saved Me. Now I’m Fighting to Save Them for My Sons

Author: Hunter Owen
By Hunter Owen I’ve spent most of my adult life in uniform. As a dad I’ve done my best to balance fatherhood and life in uniform. But the truth is, I’ve been in and out of my kids’ lives more than I care to admit. Deployments, duty stations, missed birthdays, and video calls from a continent away became the rhythm of being a dad. And now, as I try to rebuild those bonds—while managing PTSD and a traumatic brain injury. The one thing that helps me reconnect with my three boys is getting ...

Michigan BHA Goes to Washington DC

Author: Michigan BHA
Michigan BHA goes to Washington DC In early April, Mike Donovan, Chapter Board member, participated in a “DC Fly-In” to talk to our Legislators about the importance of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to Michigan’s hunters, anglers, and other recreationists.   A bipartisan creation in the 1960s, the LWCF is primarily funded by revenues from federal offshore oil and gas leases.  Much like Michigan’s own Natural Resources Trust Fund (created in the 1970s), political leaders and ...

NY May Newsletter

Author: New York BHA
Update from Chapter Chair Hey all, I hope all you turkey hunters have had some success chasing spring gobblers. If not, I hope you at least have enjoyed some time in nature!  This month, I want to highlight a few important messages. First, as I am sure many of you know, our federal public lands are under attack, with not only a proposal to sell off 500,000 acres, but also proposals to fast track mining and drilling on such pristine places as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Now is the time to ...

Turkey Quills & Teenagers

I received a well written email from the head of student council at a local high school asking for BHA to come table an event during their Earth Week. He was put up to this task by his environmental science teacher, who just so happens to be a BHA member as well.  I coordinated with the student and picked a date for me to come in at lunch. Prior to Earth Week, I also dropped off BHA donated supplies to help with their Earth Day trash clean-up. With donated supplies from BHA, the students ...
