2023 Michigan BHA Rendezvous Recap

Author: Michigan BHA
Michigan BHA Rendezvous Provides Connection and Community There is a unique sense of connection experienced at every BHA gathering. It is the result of knowing that a love for public land, water, and wildlife is the common thread that pulls us together. That connection was on full display from July 28-30 as dozens of passionate public land owners made their way to the Looking Glass Sportsman Club for the 2023 Michigan BHA Rendezvous. Friday night the campground came to life as people ...

Cornwall Creek Flooding - Recreation Opportunity May be Lost

Author: Michigan BHA
Cornwall Creek Flooding may be a place known to you and for others not so much. To me, the Cornwall Creek Flooding is near and dear to my heart, my family having camped on its shores every winter for over a decade. Surrounded by the Pigeon River Country State Forest (PRC) this impoundment was created in 1966 to provide a high quality, publicly accessible fishery and it has been successful. Enjoyed by many for its beauty and lack of development within the over 100,000 contiguous acres of the ...

Michigan BHA Chapter Removes Fences for Forest Service

Author: Michigan BHA
In early 2020, the U.S. Forest Service and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers began to work together to identify projects east of the Mississippi that would be ideal for BHA volunteers to complete. During these discussions the USFS identified a project that would remove four miles of barbwire fencing in the Huron-Manistee National Forest near Glennie, Michigan. The Michigan chapter was more than happy to help on such an important project.   “We were really excited to help on this project, and it ...

Proposal would expand hunting and angling access in Michigan

Author: Michigan BHA
As a fellow outdoorsperson, and someone who spends the majority of his outdoor time on public lands, I find the opportunity of gaining access to new land exciting. While huge tracts are every sportsperson’s dream, sometimes even the smaller parcels, heretofore not accessible, are indeed as imperative and promising, and a cause for celebration. One such opportunity faces us now – Interior Secretary David Bernhardt has proposed increasing access for hunting and fishing on over 2.3 million ...

Author: Michigan BHA
Your Michigan Board just finished our annual planning retreat and we want to share a few things with all of you about this past year and the upcoming plans that we have scheduled for 2020. First, as many of you already know, Michigan was honored as Chapter of the Year this past spring at the National Rendezvous in Boise, Idaho. Congratulations to each and every one of you for the role you played.  None of that recognition could come without members that are always willing to step up, ...

Michigan Adds Over 2000 New Acres of Public land!

Author: Michigan BHA
This October, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources agreed to purchase the Storey Lake property in Otsego and Charlevoix counties in the North East Lower Peninsula. This win for Michigan sportsmen and women comes after two decades of negotiation and advocacy by sportsmen’s groups. The 2,000-acre property is within Michigan’s primary elk range and contains the formerly private Storey Lake as well as more than a mile of Stewart Creek. This acquisition — in addition to bolstering public ...

The 2019 Michigan BHA Rendezvous and Finding Common Ground

Author: Michigan BHA
With a few weeks to reflect on the numerous successes of the 2019 Michigan Chapter Rendezvous, common ground was the unofficial theme that kept popping into my head. Hundreds of individuals gathered at Tall Oaks Campground on August 16th and 17th, where we  surrounded by thousands of acres of our public lands inside the Manistee National Forest. For the outdoor enthusiasts, professionals, youth and many others that were getting their first taste of the hook and bullet community, this place ...

Action Alert! Michigan Public Lands at Risk

Author: Michigan BHA
What do you get when you make it harder for the DNR to acquire public land and easer for the DNR to sell public land? Less public land. And in a death of a thousand small cuts, that’s exactly what Senate Bills 302 & 303 propose. As the sportsmen’s voice for our wild public lands, waters and wildlife, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is committed to keeping Michigan’s public lands in public hands. That’s why we oppose these bills, which passed the Senate last year and are scheduled for a House ...
