MA: A Tire and Invasive Species Cleanup RECAP

Spring cleanup is in full swing, early season warm weather created perfect conditions for a public land pack out at the Jean M. Booker Conservation Area in Monson, Massachusetts.

The Booker Properties are made up of three separate parcels totaling 129 acres owned by the town of Monson, with a conservation restriction held by Opacum Land Trust. The properties are open passive recreation such as walking, hiking, mountain biking, nature viewing, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, hunting and fishing.

Opacum Land Trusts and New England BHA partnered up for a stewardship project to remove tires and construction waste from illegal dumping in the streams and vernal pools throughout the Booker property. The group managed to remove 20+ large tires, piles of scrap metal, mattresses and assorted other waste that was preventing water movement and polluting the wetlands.

This is a great ongoing partnership, and we are hoping to plan more stewardship events with Opacum Land Trust across the 13 towns in south central Massachusetts they conserve.
