Colorado BHA Spring 2016 Update

Colorado BHA wrapped up a series of four Hunter Happy Hours (aka “Beers for the Backcountry”) in December. Thanks to all those who helped organize these events, Bob Shettel and Kevin Alexander in particular. Craig Grother joined the chapter’s regional director ranks, becoming our Central West Slope RD. He also was appointed by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell to the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area Advisory Council. Tony Prendergast and Kevin Alexander were appointed by Gunnison County to a collaborative working group looking at permanent protection for wilderness quality lands in Gunnison County.

BHA Life Member Steve Choromanski manned a table at the Colorado Traditional Archers Society banquet. Brad Nicol and Ross Bruno volunteered to serve as the sportsmen/BHA representatives for Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s State Trails Plan update. And San Juan NF Habitat Watchmen Tom Sykes wrote an op-ed “Stolen’ Lands Argument Goes Nowhere.” U.S. Army veteran David Hartmann became our newest BHA Life Member. Thanks guys!

Colorado BHA has been spearheading legislation aimed at expanding public hunting and fishing access on Colorado’s state trust lands. We commented on travel management scoping for the BLM’s Little Snake Field Office and on proposed state OHV legislation. The chapter’s 2nd annual Wild Game Cook-off will be on Thursday, May 5, at 6 p.m. at Großen Bart Brewery in Longmont. In addition, our eighth annual chapter rendezvous is scheduled for June 3-5, 2016, in the San Isabel National Forest west of Salida/Poncha Springs.
